Understanding Laylatul Qadr
Laylatul Qadr is one of the most incredible nights in Islam. It’s known as the Night of Power. This night is filled with blessings, forgiveness, and mercy. Muslims everywhere look forward to it during the last ten days of Ramadan. Worship on this night is even better than worshiping for a thousand months.
What is Laylatul Qadr?
Laylatul Qadr means Night of Power or Decree. It’s the night when Allah ﷻ sent down the first verses of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Quran then ended up being gradually revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over a period of 23 years.
People believe Laylatul Qadr is a night when the heavens open up and angels come down. It’s all about peace and divine mercy. The rewards for worshipping on this night are beyond what we can imagine.
When Laylatul Qadr Happens and How We Observe It
Laylatul Qadr occurs in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Most scholars think it’s on an odd-numbered night like the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th. Some people believe the 27th night is the one, but nobody can say for sure.
Since the exact date isn’t known, Muslims boost up their prayers and worship during this final stretch. They stay up late praying, reading the Quran, and making du’a. Some spend the whole night in ibadah, while others do i’tikaf (staying in the mosque to worship more deeply).
Why is Laylatul Qadr Important?
Its Link to the Quran’s Revelation
Laylatul Qadr is the night when Angel Jibril (Gabriel) brought the first verses of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn”. (Quran 97:1-5)
A Chance for a Fresh Start
This night gives people a chance for a new beginning. Anyone who prays and seeks forgiveness can have their past mistakes wiped clean inshallah.
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah ﷻ, then all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah ﷻ, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901)

• Pray two units (rakas) of prayer every day. If it falls on Laylatul Qadr, it’s as if you prayed every day for 83 years.
• Recite Dua for Laylatul Qadr: It was narrated from Aishah (رضي الله عنها) that she said, O Messenger of Allah ﷻ, what do you think I should say in my supplication, if I come upon Laylatul Qadr? He ﷺ said:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni
O Allah, you are forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.
