My Transport Tips

Getting Around:
- Use TfL journey planner for exact routes
- Download Citymapper app for real-time transport updates
- Most mosques are accessible by bus or tube (uber or cabs also available).
Areas with Multiple Mosque Options:
- Whitechapel/Bethnal Green: Has multiple mosques within walking distance. There’s a strong Muslim community. You can find halal shops around pretty much everywhere.
- Edgware Road: Has several smaller mosques for the Arabic-speaking community. You can also find good Middle Eastern food nearby.
- Green Street (East Ham): Has many mosques but it’s further from central London. It has a large South Asian community.
- Southall: Multiple mosques but way out west. I would only visit if you’re staying nearby.
Best Mosques by Location Strategy
• If you’re staying near tourist sites (like Westminster and Covent Garden): London Central Mosque is your only realistic option.
• If you’re staying in East London: Visit East London Mosque or smaller community mosques in Whitechapel.
• If you’re staying in South London: South London has fewer major mosque options compared to East or Central London. Visit the South London Islamic Centre in Streatham. Or make the trip to East London Mosque or London Central Mosque for Friday prayers.
• If you’re staying near airports: Heathrow and Gatwick have multi-faith areas.
Don’t miss my post on Halal Hotel in London to find out where I’ve stayed.
Friday Prayers:
- Arrive early as central mosques get very crowded
Parking:
- Central London mosques have very limited or no parking
- Use public transport whenever possible
- Some outer London mosques may have parking facilities
Prayer Times
- Prayer times can vary slightly between mosques
- Check individual mosque websites for exact times
- Some mosques start congregational prayers 5-10 minutes after standard prayer times
Accessibility
Wheelchair Access:
- Major mosques like East London Mosque will tend to have wheelchair accessibility
- Smaller community mosques may have limited accessibility
- Make sure to call ahead to check
Women’s Facilities:
- All major mosques have separate women’s prayer areas
- Some smaller community mosques and Islamic centers may not have female prayer areas so sisters, please check in advance.
Before Visiting:
- Check mosque websites for current opening times, and women’s area
- Some mosques close between prayers
- Friday prayer times can vary by 30-60 minutes between mosques
- If you’re travelling for Ramadan, check the website for taraweeh prayer timings.
